When I was 8 or 9 years old I was the youngest person to sign the ledger at the 12,589-foot summit of Mount Conness in Yosemite National Park. I followed footsteps chopped across its frighteningly steep beautiful glacier.
Due to Climate Change Conness Glacier (one of California’s largest) is now melting so fast, it's likely to be gone in 10 or 20 (Now 5-10) years.
Because glacial mass is affected by long-term climate changes, e.g., precipitation, mean temperature, and cloud cover, glacial mass changes are considered among the most sensitive indicators of climate change – a canary-in-the-coal-mine for the planet.
OIL & ICE is an abstraction of Mt Conness its beautiful turquoise glacial lake, glacier and the newly exposed rock from burning the fossil fuel ‘ribbon’ of oil & chunks of coal – the elephant-in-the-room. This piece was my first experiment with fused glass frit for the lake. It lead me to the idea of using actual ice for Tapped Out, When Our Ship Comes In and Mother Nature.
The backside of OIL & ICE is hand glazed with a Redwood tree enshrouded in the fog critical to its survival. We are seeing less fog & more stress on our Redwoods due to Climate Change.
I believe in nature, its beauty, interconnections and inspiration. I believe it can be a guide by its responses to our actions.
Clay has a memory. It records your fingerprints and all the ways you held it in your hands. Our earth has a memory and responds to our manipulations. My work in clay draws from the knowledge that everything…food, home, clothes, tools, toys all come from the ‘clay’ of the earth and the hope that we will remember to grow, gather & consume leaving the smallest fingerprint.
Oil & Ice = Climate Change
Melting Glaciers = Canary in the Coal Mine for Earth
Fossil Fuels = Elephant in the Room
Note: I have a few real coal chunks that sit at the base of the sculpture.
A rare native Redwood tree enshrouded by our disappearing fog essential to its livelihood.
One more piece of Climate Change in California.
